Wolf / Longwood O’zapft Is!
O’Zapft Is! is a traditional Märzen created in collaboration with the fine folks at Longwood Brewery. Brewed right here at Wolf Brewing Company, O’Zapft Is! was made with the autumn harvest in mind, featuring an aromatic malt profile and German noble tettnanger hops. The result is a toasty, malty, honey-hued harvest lager with full-bodied flavour and a clean finish. Traditionally brewed in March and left to mature over the summer months, Märzen is the traditional beer of Oktoberfest. On the first day of the festival, the Master of Ceremonies shouts “o’zapft is!” (it is tapped!) as he opens the first keg of the festival. If you ask us, there’s no better way to start a festival, and no better name for this Oktoberfest beer.
Oktoberfest is a German festival dating from 1810, and Oktoberfestbiers are the beers that have been served at the festival since 1818, and are supplied by 6 breweries: Spaten, Lowenbrau, Augustiner, Hofbrau, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr.Traditionally Oktoberfestbiers were the lagers of around 5.5 to 6 abv called Marzen - brewed in March and allowed to ferment slowly during the summer months.Originally these would have been dark lagers, but from 1872 a strong March brewed version of an amber-red Vienna lager made by Josef Sedlmayr became the favourite Oktoberfestbier.
