Emerson's Phantom Lord (330ml Can)
Phantom Lord is a stout. A big, black stout. It displays all the classic stout, characteristics. Black as tar, opulent roast and chocolate notes yet hopped in the way we would hop an American Style Pale Ale. The malt grist is made up primarily of ale, roast barley, chocolate and crystal malts, with rolled oats included to add that smooth mouth feel. Phantom Lord has been mash hopped, first wort hopped, hopped in the kettle and once boiled, the steaming hot wort has been pumped through fresh, new season hop cones – hop backed! Fermenting with an English Ale yeast has added a luxurious depth to the malty mouthfeel. Once this yeast has almost done its work, we have pumped another massive dose of hop pellets into the fermenter. The result, a 2-for-1 type experience. A complex array of satisfying malt balanced with the fruity, resinous hop aroma and flavour most beer drinkers yearn for all year round. If you’re wondering about the name, it’s not meant as a reference to the ever travelling Mr Emerson. We’re referring to the once great heavy metal pioneers, Metallica and a song title from their revolutionary first album. Raise your glass, to malt, to hops and to their wonderful combination. To quote the song “Fall to your knees and praise the Phantom Lord”
Many stouts do not fit the classic "Irish" definition as exemplified by Guinness, either due to their hop or roast rates, or higher gravity (in the case of many American stouts). They are still basic stouts, however, not falling into any of the subclasses.
