Buxton Axe Edge (500ml Bottle)
Axe Edge, our 6. 8% Double IPA has been re-vamped and re-designed somewhat by JK, our resident hop-head brewer. He has taken the hop bill and exchanged the Cascade, Hallertau, Chinook and Golding for Amarillo, Citra and Nelson Sauvin. These three hop varieties, added in copious amounts for aroma and flavour, (Galena and Golding used for bittering) have transformed this already tasty double IPA into something rather special. The malt bill has been given the once over as well, simplifed and now comprising pilsen and caramalt, it gives the beer its firm malt backbone. But this beer is all about the hops. On the nose, it just oozes fresh tropical fruits and juicy citrus, which continues onto the palate, filling the mouth with a marvelously dry and bitter, refreshing sensation. On the finish, this beer lingers long after the final sip.
Imperial IPA, Double IPA or DIPA is a strong, often sweet, intensely hoppy version of the traditional India Pale Ale. Bitterness units range upward of 100 IBUs and alcohol begins at 7.5% but is more commonly in the 8.5-10% range. The flavour profile is intense all-round. Unlike barley wines, the balance is heavily towards the hops, with crystal and other malts providing support.
